Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) has announced the appointment of Dr. William Heiser as its new superintendent, succeeding Dr. Myriam Rogers, who plans to retire in July 2026.
Dr. Heiser, who is currently the chief operating officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS), brings nearly 30 years of educational experience across three Maryland school systems. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead BCPS and emphasized his commitment to supporting students and staff while building on the progress made under Dr. Rogers' leadership.
During his tenure at AACPS, which serves over 85,000 students across 130 schools, Heiser managed a $195 million capital budget and oversaw significant school construction and redistricting initiatives. His leadership has been recognized by his peers, including AACPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell, who praised Heiser as an innovative and dedicated educational leader.
Dr. Heiser's previous roles include serving as president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore City from 2015 to 2023, principal of Catonsville High School in Baltimore County, and principal of North County High School in Anne Arundel County. He was named Maryland High School Principal of the Year in 2013.
The selection of Dr. Heiser followed a comprehensive nationwide search conducted by the executive search firm Ray and Associates, which attracted numerous qualified candidates. Baltimore County school board chair Jane Lichter highlighted Heiser's dedication to academic excellence and his vision for equitable school communities as key factors in his selection.
Dr. Heiser holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Loyola University Maryland, as well as a doctoral degree in education from Morgan State University. He resides in Anne Arundel County with his family.
His appointment is pending final contract negotiations, and the school board is set to formally appoint him during a meeting on June 24 at 6:30 p.m.
