Two Baltimore residents, Bernice and Gerald Byrd, entered guilty pleas for child abuse on Thursday, following the tragic death of their 5-year-old daughter, Zona Byrd, in 2024.
Zona was discovered unresponsive in her bed by a family member, who alerted authorities. Upon arrival, police described the child as emaciated and malnourished. The couple's 6-year-old son was also found in a similar state of malnutrition but has since been hospitalized and is recovering.
According to the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office, Bernice and Gerald Byrd are scheduled for sentencing on June 10. They face potential sentences totaling up to 70 years in prison.
State's Attorney Ivan Bates expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "No punishment will be as severe for these defendants as living with the knowledge that they murdered their innocent child." He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Zona's siblings, who are also victims of their parents' actions.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the Byrds' residence on Aiken Street after Zona's aunt reported that the child was not moving and felt cold to the touch. Investigators noted that both parents struggled to recall the last time they had seen Zona alive or when she had last been fed.
At the time of her death, Zona weighed only 17.5 pounds. The couple's son, who was also discovered in a distressed condition, weighed approximately 35 pounds and was barely able to walk.
During their investigation, police found the home lacking in food, with only a salad in the refrigerator and non-perishable items locked away from the children. Gerald Byrd informed officers that the children had been searching through trash for food.
This incident was not the Byrds' first encounter with child abuse allegations; they previously faced accusations in 2019 when one of their daughters was found with injuries sustained from physical altercations with her parents.
