Boil Water Advisory Issued for Accokeek and Clinton Areas

WSSC Water has announced a boil water advisory affecting residents in the Accokeek and Clinton regions of Prince George's County, following a significant water main break.

The advisory was put in place on Thursday after a 16-inch diameter water main ruptured around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Livingston and Piscataway Roads in Clinton. As of 8 a.m. Friday, the advisory remains active while crews continue to assess the situation.

To assist those affected, bottled water is available for pickup at Accokeek Academy, located at 14400 Barry Road, until 2 p.m. on Friday. WSSC Water has advised that approximately 3,600 customers should boil their water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or providing it to pets. Additionally, any recently stored water, beverages, or ice should be discarded.

Lyn Riggins, a spokesperson for WSSC Water, stated that the cause of the break is currently unknown, and it has not yet been decided whether a forensic analysis will be conducted. Riggins noted that the utility typically experiences about 1,800 water main leaks or breaks each year, with around 1,100 occurring during the winter months due to colder temperatures affecting the system.

“Heat doesn’t have the same effect as the cold, so we don’t have a cause right now,” Riggins explained.

Updates on the boil water advisory will be communicated through WSSC Water's social media channels.
