BALTIMORE — Firefighters have successfully contained a three-alarm fire that tore through rowhomes in East Baltimore, but the incident has resulted in tragic consequences.
The Baltimore City Fire Department received reports of a fire in the 2200 block of Guilford Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m. Fire crews arrived to find flames visible from a 2½-story middle rowhouse, affecting both the second and third floors.
Fire Chief James Wallace confirmed that initial reports indicated a person was trapped inside the residence. Firefighters attempted to conduct a rescue but were forced to retreat due to extreme heat, hazardous conditions, and a partial collapse at the rear of the structure.
Tragically, the missing individual, identified as a 70-year-old woman, was discovered deceased the following day.
The fire spread to adjacent homes, prompting the escalation to a third alarm as flames were observed breaking through the roofline of the affected buildings. In total, three homes suffered significant fire damage, while three others experienced smoke and water damage. Additionally, a gas leak was reported in the vicinity.
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, and two civilians were treated for symptoms related to smoke inhalation.
As of now, traffic restrictions remain in effect on Guilford Avenue, and these are expected to continue through the evening rush hour as crews work to ensure the safety of the area.
