ICE Officer Shoots Innocent Man During Operation in Texas

A 52-year-old man, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was shot by an ICE officer on Tuesday morning while driving his van near Houston, Texas. Reports indicate that the acting head of ICE informed Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia that Araujo was not the intended target of the operation.

According to Rep. Garcia, ICE was searching for a person with a final removal order who was believed to have entered Araujo's vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security stated that agents attempted to stop Araujo's van, claiming he tried to evade arrest and allegedly rammed into an ICE vehicle, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense.

Video footage circulating on social media captures the aftermath of the shooting, but the details surrounding the incident remain contested. An attorney representing two other men who were in Araujo's van disputes the ICE account, asserting that their version of events contradicts the agency's claims regarding the ramming incident.

These two men, also undocumented migrants, are currently facing removal proceedings. Notably, ICE agents were not equipped with body cameras at the time, resulting in a lack of comprehensive visual evidence from the scene.

Tom Homan, a former border czar under the Trump administration, mentioned that ICE is conducting an investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough review before drawing conclusions. He stated, "We're going to hold our officers to high standard, but we gotta wait for the investigation to play out because who knows?"

The district attorney has urged the public to provide any information related to the shooting as his office continues its investigation. He noted that federal authorities did not invite his office to the scene, which is typically standard practice in such cases.

Lawmakers are calling for further accountability from ICE and the Department of Homeland Security regarding the incident.
