BEL AIR, Md. — Authorities in Bel Air are actively searching for a man accused of assaulting a young girl in the Majors Choice neighborhood on Saturday afternoon.
According to local police, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. as the girl was walking along Majors Choice Drive near a pond. A man reportedly approached her from behind and grabbed her by the neck. Witnesses suggest that the suspect may have been parked nearby with the rear hatch of his vehicle open.
Fortunately, the girl managed to escape and quickly ran to a neighbor's house for assistance. Kevin Edelmann, a resident of the neighborhood, recounted the moment the girl arrived at his door, visibly shaken and screaming for help.
“She came in where my wife was sitting in the living room, absolutely hysterical, looking for help, saying she was attacked,” Edelmann said. His wife promptly called 911 to report the incident.
Bel Air Police Sgt. Sergio D'Alto praised the girl's quick thinking, noting that her ability to scream and create a commotion likely contributed to her escape.
Police have described the suspect as a man in his 30s, with brown hair and a thin build, possibly wearing a ballcap at the time of the incident. In response to the assault, law enforcement has increased patrols in the area and is urging residents to remain vigilant.
“We’re asking for the public’s help and any video footage, ring camera footage, or information about anything suspicious in the area,” D'Alto stated.
Edelmann expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that it is unusual for the generally safe neighborhood. “99.9% of the time I’m very comfortable. It’s very safe, but this one outlier drives concern,” he remarked.
Anyone with information or video footage related to the incident is encouraged to reach out to the Bel Air police department.
