Andrew Gillum Arrested on Drug Charges in Alabama

Andrew Gillum, the former Democratic candidate for governor of Florida, was arrested on July 2 in Daphne, Alabama, after police observed him driving erratically. Authorities discovered marijuana and methamphetamine in his vehicle during the stop.

The Daphne Police Department reported that officers conducted the traffic stop around 10:45 p.m. and initiated a probable cause search after spotting a glass pipe on the center console. In addition to the glass pipe, police found several rolled marijuana cigarettes and three packages containing a substance that tested positive for meth.

Gillum, 46, who served as the mayor of Tallahassee from 2014 to 2018, is facing charges of marijuana possession and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was released from jail the following day, on July 3. As of now, court records related to his case have not been made available, and there has been no information disclosed regarding legal representation.

This incident adds to Gillum's ongoing legal issues; he was previously indicted on federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges in 2022, which stemmed from allegations of misusing campaign funds. A trial in 2023 resulted in a hung jury on those charges, though he was acquitted of lying to FBI agents.

Gillum gained prominence in Florida politics as a rising star within the Democratic Party, narrowly losing the gubernatorial race to current Republican Governor Ron DeSantis by less than 34,000 votes in 2018. His political career faced significant challenges following a 2020 incident in Miami Beach, where he was found in a hotel room with an individual who had overdosed on drugs. Following that incident, Gillum took time away from public life to address personal issues related to alcohol abuse and mental health.
