Baltimore County's Board of Education has announced the selection of Dr. William Heiser as the new superintendent of schools, following a nationwide search. The decision was made public on Monday, with the appointment pending final contract negotiations.

Dr. Heiser, who previously served as the Chief Operating Officer for Anne Arundel County schools, has garnered approval from the State Superintendent of Schools. Board of Education Chair Jane Lichter expressed enthusiasm for Heiser's appointment, highlighting his commitment to academic excellence and the development of equitable school communities.

“Dr. Heiser's passion and dedication set him apart, and we are excited to work with him to advance our school system,” Lichter stated. She noted the progress made by Baltimore County Public Schools over the past three years and expressed confidence in Heiser's leadership.

With over 28 years of experience in education, Dr. Heiser has held various leadership positions across three Maryland school districts. His tenure as COO in Anne Arundel County involved overseeing a district that serves over 85,000 students across 130 schools.

Dr. Heiser has also held significant roles such as president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore and principal at Catonsville High School in Baltimore County. His leadership at North County High School in Anne Arundel County led to notable improvements in student achievement and graduation rates.

“I am deeply humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve as the next superintendent of this incredible school system,” Dr. Heiser remarked, emphasizing his commitment to prioritizing students and collaborating with the Board of Education.

The Board of Education is scheduled to formally appoint Dr. Heiser on June 24. He will succeed Myriam Rogers, who is set to retire on July 1 after leading the district since 2023.

Dr. Heiser aims to build upon the achievements made under Rogers’ leadership, expressing confidence in the collaborative efforts needed to elevate the school system further.
