The Baltimore County Board of Education has selected William Heiser as the new superintendent, following a vote of 8-1 with two abstentions. Heiser, who has served as the chief operating officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, will assume his new position on July 1, pending the successful negotiation of his employment contract.
This appointment comes after the retirement announcement of current superintendent Myriam Rogers, who has held the position for three years.
Jane Lichter, chairperson of the school board, expressed enthusiasm for Heiser's appointment, highlighting his dedication to academic excellence and his commitment to fostering equitable school environments. Lichter noted that the board conducted an extensive nationwide search that attracted a pool of highly-qualified candidates passionate about education.
As part of the selection process, the board enlisted the services of Ray and Associates LLC to facilitate the search, which included gathering input from the community and staff through forums and an online survey.
Among the finalists for the position was David Sovine, the outgoing superintendent of Washington County Public Schools, who opted not to pursue a new contract. The Washington County Board of Education has since promoted Deputy Superintendent Gary Willow to fill the superintendent role starting July 1.
