The Baltimore Fire Officers Union is taking proactive measures to address the elevated risk of esophageal cancer among firefighters by offering a non-invasive screening clinic this week.
Firefighters face a 62 percent higher likelihood of developing this type of cancer due to the nature of their work. The union emphasizes that early detection is crucial, as the disease is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages.
Michael Hudson, a representative from Baltimore Fire Officers Local 964, highlighted the importance of these screenings, stating that typical medical practitioners may not recommend such tests until it is too late. The screenings aim to identify potential issues early, allowing for timely treatment.
The first testing session is scheduled for tomorrow, running from 8 AM to 4 PM at the Union Hall located on Linwood Avenue. Additionally, the union plans to organize follow-up sessions in the coming months to accommodate more active-duty personnel and retirees.
