BALTIMORE, MD — City officials revealed on Thursday that a coordinated law enforcement operation has led to the arrest of five juveniles and three adults linked to a violent crime spree in Baltimore.
Among the charges filed are first-degree murder, carjacking, and robbery with a deadly weapon. Notably, one of the juveniles, a 17-year-old, is implicated in 23 different cases.
During a press conference held on June 25, Mayor Brandon Scott, State's Attorney Ivan Bates, and Police Commissioner Richard Worley detailed the investigation that culminated in the arrests.
According to charging documents, the crime wave included a tragic incident on May 8, when 38-year-old Jamal Ferguson was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking in the 4400 block of Fairview Avenue. Reports indicate that multiple suspects approached Ferguson's vehicle, ordering him and a passenger out at gunpoint. Ferguson attempted to escape, but was struck by gunfire.
As detectives delved deeper into Ferguson's murder, they uncovered a disturbing pattern of violent offenses involving the same group of suspects. The investigation revealed that these individuals typically operated in groups, brandishing firearms with colored lasers or lights, and targeting victims in the early morning hours.
Victims were often ordered out of their vehicles, robbed of personal belongings, and in some cases, physically assaulted. Authorities have linked a total of 23 incidents, including carjackings and robberies, to this group between April 23 and May 24.
In the course of the investigation, law enforcement executed search warrants at several locations, resulting in the seizure of seven firearms, including five 9mm handguns, a .380 caliber weapon, and a Polymer 80 firearm.
