Baltimore Woman Forms Bond with Good Samaritan Who Returned Stolen Packages

Baltimore, Md. — A woman from West Baltimore has successfully located the good Samaritan who intervened when thieves attempted to steal her packages, resulting in a meaningful connection between the two.

D. FitzGerald Smith, affectionately known as Chip, was out for an early morning stroll around 5 a.m. on Sunday when he noticed two individuals breaking into cars in his neighborhood. As he observed, the suspects entered a white SUV and began removing boxes.

Smith, realizing what was happening, shouted at the thieves, causing them to flee and abandon the packages. He took it upon himself to ensure the items were returned to their rightful owner, even attempting to ring the doorbell of the home where the packages were meant to go, but the resident, identified as Cruz, was still asleep.

Determined to return the packages, Smith decided to leave them on Cruz's doorstep, stating, "I'm not going to leave them here, I'm gonna pick them up and put them on her doorstep." He expressed that his actions were simply a reflection of his upbringing, downplaying the notion of being labeled a hero.

After leaving a note in Cruz's mailbox, the two connected by phone, where Smith discovered that the packages contained items funded by the community for improvements to a local green space.

When they finally met in person, Cruz expressed her gratitude, noting, "You really, really came through... things like this really crush your spirit... but when you meet people like you, it brings back some faith in people." To commemorate their newfound friendship, she presented Smith with fresh sunflowers and a card.

Cruz, who moved to Baltimore seeking a sense of community, now feels reassured knowing Smith lives just a few blocks away. "That's it, we're friends for life," she remarked, adding that meeting him has made her feel safer in her neighborhood.

Smith reciprocated her sentiments, declaring, "And you are now, as I say, you are my sister." Their bond highlights the positive connections that can arise within a community, even amidst challenges.
