Bus Accident in Pikesville Results in 28 Injuries

A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, resulted in injuries to at least 28 individuals on Wednesday night, July 8. The Baltimore County Fire Department classified the incident as a mass casualty event.

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus was involved in a collision with multiple vehicles before crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. Initial reports indicate that the bus struck a Lexus and then a Nissan before coming to a halt against the structure.

One individual has been reported in critical condition as a result of the crash. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, with several police and fire units actively responding at the scene. Jerimiah Moerke, a spokesperson for the MTA, confirmed the bus's involvement in the multi-vehicle accident.

Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that due to the high number of injured individuals, the situation was escalated to a level one mass casualty incident. Emergency responders successfully extricated the bus driver from the vehicle, which was lodged into the building, and all injured persons were transported to local hospitals for medical care.

The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the four-story apartment building that was impacted. They found that while the building's support beams remained intact, the first floor has been temporarily condemned.

Authorities are advising motorists to steer clear of the area as emergency crews continue their operations. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with involvement from MTA Police, Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors.
