Coast Guard Helicopter Crashes in Alaska During Training, Four Injured

Four crew members were injured on Monday when a Coast Guard helicopter crashed during a routine training mission in southeast Alaska.

The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter went down several miles from Sitka, in a remote area near Harbor Mountain. Sitka is located on Baranof Island, where the Pacific Ocean influences the climate, resulting in significant rainfall throughout the year.

Rescue teams arrived at the crash site around 11 a.m., approximately one hour after the incident. All four crew members were subsequently transported to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center for treatment of their injuries, which were reported as minor.

Rear Adm. Bob Little, who commands the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, expressed relief regarding the survival of the crew. “We are incredibly relieved our crew members survived with only minor injuries,” he stated.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway, although details regarding what led to the incident remain unclear.

This helicopter crash comes in the wake of several other aviation accidents this month, including a business jet crash in Texas and a B-52 crash in California, both resulting in fatalities.
