BALTIMORE, Md. — Dr. Laura D'Anna, a dedicated educator with over five decades of service in the Baltimore City Public School system, was recently honored with a surprise retirement party that left her deeply moved.
Friends, family, past students, and colleagues gathered at the American Legion Post #22 on York Road, completely catching D'Anna off guard. Initially led to believe she was going out for Italian food with her friend Tammy Dowell, D'Anna was surprised to find the venue decorated in her favorite shade of blue, filled with familiar faces.
"I'm usually pretty good about sensing something's up," D'Anna remarked, noting her confusion upon arrival. "When we pulled up, I said, 'This doesn't look like a restaurant!'"
At the event, she was presented with a tiara and a sash proclaiming her as a retired legend, a testament to her impactful career. D'Anna has served as a principal since 1998 and has been recognized for her straightforward and caring approach to education.
Throughout her career, she primarily worked in alternative schools catering to students in the juvenile detention system. Many attendees shared stories of how D'Anna's unwavering support and encouragement helped them overcome challenges and succeed.
One letter from students at Eager Street Academy, where she last served as principal, was read aloud during the celebration. It expressed deep appreciation for her guidance: "Our time together has come to an end. But we will love you until the end. Our dear beloved friend, we wish you the best."
Former students also raised a toast in her honor, with D'Anna reflecting on her contributions and the impact she made over the years. "I said nobody really cares, and I just felt so alone," she admitted, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and self-belief.
