TOWSON, MD — The Baltimore County Board of Education has appointed Dr. William Heiser as the new superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS). Heiser, who previously served as the chief operating officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, was announced as the selected candidate on Monday, just days after the board finalized its decision.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Heiser remarked, “I am deeply humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve as the next superintendent of this incredible school system.” He emphasized his commitment to working closely with the Board of Education and all stakeholders to ensure that the needs of students remain the priority.
Jane Lichter, chair of the Baltimore County Board of Education, expressed confidence in Heiser’s leadership, stating that his vision would greatly benefit students, staff, and families within the BCPS community.
Before Heiser's official appointment can proceed, it is subject to approval from Dr. Carey Wright, the Maryland state superintendent. Following this, negotiations regarding Heiser's contract will take place.
Heiser is expected to be formally appointed on Wednesday, with his tenure beginning on July 1. He will succeed Myriam Rogers, who announced her retirement earlier this year, prompting the search for a new superintendent.
With an enrollment of over 100,000 students, BCPS is one of the largest school districts in Maryland. Heiser brings decades of educational experience, having previously held principal roles at three high schools and receiving the Maryland High School Principal of the Year Award in 2013. His extensive background also includes overseeing significant initiatives such as redistricting and managing a $195 million capital budget during his time in Anne Arundel County.
