BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — The Baltimore County Board of Education has officially appointed Dr. William Heiser as the new superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS).
Dr. Heiser's selection followed a comprehensive nationwide search conducted by the executive search firm Ray and Associates, with approval from State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey Wright.
With a career in education spanning over two decades, Dr. Heiser previously served as the Chief Operating Officer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools. In this role, he managed a substantial capital budget of $195 million, overseeing numerous school construction projects.
Before his tenure as COO, Dr. Heiser was the president of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore City from 2015 to 2023 and the principal of Catonsville High School in Baltimore County from 2013 to 2015.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Loyola University Maryland, as well as a Doctorate in Education from Morgan State University.
Jane Lichter, chair of the Board of Education, expressed enthusiasm for Dr. Heiser's appointment, stating, “His passion, dedication, and strong commitment to academic excellence will serve our students well.” She emphasized that the board is excited to work alongside him to continue the progress made in the school system.
In his statement, Dr. Heiser expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I am committed to working with all stakeholders to build upon the outstanding work accomplished under Dr. Rogers’ leadership.”
The Board of Education will hold an in-person meeting on June 24 at 6:30 p.m. to formally appoint Dr. Heiser.
Following the announcement, Dr. Mark Bedell, superintendent of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, praised Dr. Heiser as an innovative and dedicated leader who will excel in his new role.
