BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — A father has been found guilty of charges related to a shooting incident that occurred on Christmas Eve in Rosedale, resulting in the death of his four-year-old son and injuries to two others.
Mark Jones Jr. was convicted of second-degree murder, the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, child abuse resulting in serious physical injury, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, and additional child abuse charges, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office.
The tragic shooting took place early on Christmas Eve at an apartment complex located on Breslin Court. According to court documents, the children's mother, who was also shot during the incident, fled to a neighbor's home seeking help, urgently telling the neighbor that her children had been shot.
Upon arrival, Baltimore County police officers forced entry into the apartment and discovered both children lying on a bed, suffering from gunshot wounds. Four-year-old Jacobi Jones was critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head and later succumbed to his injuries. His one-year-old sister was shot in the shoulder.
Investigators reported finding Mark Jones inside the apartment bedroom. It is believed that he shot the children's mother and both children before attempting to harm himself. The mother recounted to police that Jones had spent the previous night in the children's bedroom while she and the children slept in another room.
According to the mother, Jacobi had asked his father to leave shortly before the shooting began. She stated that Jones then retrieved a firearm from a bag and opened fire. The mother managed to escape to a neighbor's apartment, where the neighbor called 911 after hearing her cries.
In a disturbing detail, Jones' mother reported that she had missed a FaceTime call from him earlier that day. When she returned the call, he answered with visible injuries and told her, 'I couldn't take it anymore.'
Mark Jones had a prior legal history, having been charged in May 2023 with firearm-related assault, for which he pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and received probation before judgment.
