The Baltimore County Board of Education has announced the selection of a finalist for the role of superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools, which is now awaiting approval from state officials. This decision was made public on Saturday morning following a town hall meeting and a series of final interviews with four candidates.
If the Maryland state superintendent grants approval, the name of the next superintendent will be disclosed on Monday. The new superintendent is expected to officially take on the role on July 1.
The four candidates vying for the position each bring a diverse range of experiences in education leadership. They include:
- William “Bill” Heiser, currently the chief operating officer for the Anne Arundel County school system.
- Penelope Martin-Knox, who serves as the superintendent of Raytown C-2 School District in Missouri.
- Edward Ryans, the associate superintendent for high schools and nontraditional programs in Prince George’s County.
- David Sovine, the superintendent of Washington County Public Schools.
Baltimore County Public Schools is among the largest school districts in the nation, with approximately 108,000 students enrolled in the previous academic year. Employees within the school system have expressed a strong desire for the next superintendent to address issues such as low staff morale, better compensation, job security, and classroom sizes.
