Holiday Weekend Violence Leaves 12 Injured in Chicago Shooting

On Friday night, a shooting incident on the South Side of Chicago injured at least 12 individuals when an SUV approached a crowd and opened fire, according to police reports. The assailants, two males inside the vehicle, fled the scene following the gunfire.

Among the injured, two men are in critical condition, with one sustaining a gunshot wound to the thigh. The group of victims, consisting of eight men and four women aged between 17 and 47, is currently receiving treatment across four different hospitals.

Initially responding to a report of a single gunshot victim, police discovered a woman with two gunshot wounds to her back and a man with four graze wounds. Both individuals were reported to be in fair condition. Additionally, another male victim declined medical assistance for unspecified injuries.

This incident is part of a larger trend of violence in Chicago, with police reporting at least 21 shootings citywide since Friday evening, resulting in four fatalities. Notably, these events unfolded during Juneteenth, a significant holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Earlier that day, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama had welcomed visitors to the newly opened presidential center in the same neighborhood.

Local advocate Pastor Donovan Price expressed his dismay at the occurrence of such violence during a time meant for celebration, stating that it is tragic to witness gunfire overshadowing the holiday festivities.

Detectives are actively investigating the shooting, but further details have not yet been released.
