John Bolton Enters Guilty Plea in Classified Documents Case

John Bolton, who served as national security adviser during the Trump administration, pleaded guilty on Friday to one count of retaining national defense information.

As part of a plea agreement with the Justice Department, Bolton has accepted a potential prison sentence of up to 60 months and a fine totaling $2.25 million. However, the final decision regarding his sentence will be made by a judge at a later date, who is not obligated to adhere to the terms of the plea deal.

This plea resolves a case that began in October, when Bolton was indicted on 18 counts concerning the alleged retention and sharing of classified diary-like notes with family members. These notes were reportedly written while he was preparing a memoir about his tenure in government and contained sensitive information.

Bolton's residence was raided by the FBI in August 2025, during which multiple documents marked as secret, confidential, and classified were seized. Since leaving office, Bolton has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration.
