Johns Hopkins Doctor Injured in Carjacking Attempt in Northeast Baltimore

A doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital was shot in an attempted carjacking on Friday morning while commuting to work.

Dr. Madhu Subramanian, 38, was targeted near the intersection of Loch Raven Boulevard and East 33rd Street in the Ednor Gardens neighborhood around 7 a.m. He is an acute care surgeon specializing in burn treatment, general surgery, and trauma care.

Dr. Joseph Sakran, the chief trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins, expressed his shock at the news, initially believing it to be a hoax. He quickly prepared for Dr. Subramanian's arrival at the trauma center, describing his feelings of disbelief and concern over the severity of the injuries.

Sakran, who has personal experience with gun violence, emphasized the broader implications of the incident. He stated, "Gun violence is a public health crisis that we face daily in Baltimore and communities all across America. We have the opportunity and responsibility to do better." He later confirmed that Dr. Subramanian was released from the hospital later that day.

As of now, police have not released information regarding any suspects in the case. Community leaders, including Pastor Cleveland Mason, have voiced their concerns over the alarming trend of violence affecting those who serve the community, particularly healthcare workers.
