Keep Your Pets Safe During July 4th Celebrations

The Fourth of July is a time of celebration for many, but it can be a stressful period for pets. The combination of loud fireworks, unfamiliar faces, and disruptions to their routine can lead to anxiety and even escape attempts. According to Noelle LeVee Patterson, director of philanthropy and communication at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, this holiday sees the highest number of missing pets each year.

Pet experts recommend several strategies to keep animals safe and comfortable during the festivities:

  • Leave Pets at Home: If you plan to attend celebrations, it’s advisable to leave your pets at home. Even if you believe they can handle the noise, it’s best to allow them to stay in a familiar and quiet environment.
  • Consult Your Veterinarian: For pets that are particularly anxious about loud noises, it’s wise to consult with a veterinarian before the holiday. They may prescribe medication to help alleviate anxiety or provide guidance on managing heat-related issues.
  • Adjust Walk Times: To minimize exposure to crowds and heat, take your pets for walks earlier in the day. Ensure they have access to water and try to walk them on grass whenever possible.
  • Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet area in your home where your pet can feel secure. Providing toys and turning on music or the television can help mask the sounds from outside.
  • Ensure Identification: Even with precautions, pets may still escape. Make sure they have proper identification, such as a microchip and a collar with tags, to increase the chances of a quick reunion.

If your pet does go missing, act quickly by searching the neighborhood, putting up flyers with a current photo, and utilizing social media groups dedicated to lost pets. Contact local shelters and consider using platforms like Petco Love Lost to aid in the search.
