Maryland Faces Extreme Heat Warning with Triple-Digit Temperatures

Maryland is currently experiencing an extreme heat warning, which will remain in effect until Friday evening. The National Weather Service has predicted that temperatures will soar into the triple digits, with heat index values potentially reaching as high as 112 degrees.

The cause of this intense heat is attributed to a heat dome, a significant ridge of high pressure that is trapping warm air across the Central and Eastern United States. The warning is set to take effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

In anticipation of the extreme weather conditions, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared a State of Preparedness, activating the Maryland Department of Emergency Management to facilitate necessary preparations. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has also issued a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert, which will remain in place through Saturday.

According to Jeremy Geiger, a meteorologist at the Baltimore/Washington office of the National Weather Service, the Baltimore area may experience record-breaking temperatures, with forecasts predicting highs of 104 degrees on Thursday and 103 degrees on Friday. Geiger noted that there is a strong possibility of breaking historical records for these dates, which are 103 degrees from 1901 for July 2 and 100 degrees from 1898 for July 3.

Residents are advised to minimize outdoor activity and to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty. Wearing loose and lightweight clothing is also recommended to help manage the heat.

In response to the heat wave, Baltimore will have cooling centers available until Saturday. Additionally, all 22 city pools will remain open throughout the holiday weekend, extending their hours to accommodate residents seeking relief from the heat.
