Maryland Faces Federal Lawsuit Over Immigration Policy Changes

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a lawsuit against the state of Maryland in response to its recently enacted immigration enforcement policy.

This legal action comes after the Community Trust Act was allowed to become law by Governor Wes Moore without his signature in May. The legislation establishes restrictions on when local law enforcement can engage with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and outlines the conditions under which local jails may detain undocumented individuals.

According to the provisions of the Community Trust Act, local law enforcement agencies may only notify ICE about individuals in custody for removal proceedings if certain criteria are met. These criteria include instances where the individual has been convicted of a felony, has served a minimum of 12 months in a Maryland correctional facility, is required to register as a sex offender, or has completed at least five years of incarceration in another state.
