Mayor Scott to Appoint Chief James Wallace as New Fire Chief for Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD. — Mayor Brandon M. Scott revealed today his intention to nominate Chief James Wallace as the new Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD).

With over 33 years of experience in the fire service, Chief Wallace has a proven history of leadership and commitment to the BCFD and its emergency response initiatives. He has been at the helm of the Office of Emergency Management since March 2020, initially serving as Acting Director before being appointed as the permanent director in October 2021.

Chief Wallace's career with the BCFD began as a paramedic, and he has since advanced through various roles, including firefighter/paramedic, Fire Lieutenant, Battalion Chief for Special Operations Command, and Deputy Chief.

In a statement, Mayor Scott praised Chief Wallace's dedication, saying, “The Baltimore City Fire Department does the hard work of saving lives across our city every single day. I know that under Chief Wallace’s unmatched leadership and experience, our Fire Department will continue to excel in its mission.”

Expressing his gratitude, Chief Wallace stated, “It is an absolute honor to have the opportunity to serve as the Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department. I appreciate Mayor Scott for his leadership and support.”

Throughout his career, Chief Wallace has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to the fire service, including life-saving actions for two Baltimore City Police Officers and a Department of Public Works employee. He holds multiple certifications in emergency management and safety training from esteemed institutions such as the National Fire Academy and the Emergency Management Institute.

The nomination will be presented at the upcoming Baltimore City Council meeting scheduled for August 21, 2023.
