On Monday, the Maryland attorney general’s Independent Investigations Division disclosed the identities of two Baltimore Police officers involved in a fatal shooting that occurred last week.
Officers Sharod Watson and Mark Rankine shot and killed 46-year-old Louis Jackson during an incident in Southwest Baltimore on Thursday morning. The officers responded to a 911 call indicating that a man was armed and suicidal near Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded shortly after 9 a.m. when officers arrived in the 800 block of Caton Avenue. Upon their arrival, Jackson allegedly opened fire on the officers, disregarding commands to drop his weapon and surrender. In response, both officers returned fire, striking Jackson.
Emergency medical personnel transported Jackson to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A revolver was recovered from the scene of the shooting, and thankfully, no officers sustained injuries during the encounter.
A witness described the scene, stating that she heard officers instructing the armed man to comply and observed him refusing their orders. She recounted seeing him on the ground bleeding shortly after the exchange of gunfire.
As the investigation continues, the attorney general’s office is urging anyone with additional information to reach out at 410-576-7070. The family of Jackson has not yet made a public statement regarding the incident, and Baltimore Police have not provided further comments.
