Prince George’s County Executive Aisha Braveboy has announced the appointment of Oluseyi Olugbenle as the acting director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation, effective July 3.
Olugbenle, who has served as the department’s deputy director, takes over from Michael Johnson, who has been in the role since 2022. In her statement, Braveboy expressed gratitude for Johnson's service, highlighting his efforts to enhance the county's transportation infrastructure and overall service to residents.
Johnson's tenure faced challenges earlier this year when the department's handling of a severe winter snowstorm drew criticism, leading to delays in clearing county roads.
The county plans to conduct a regional search for a permanent director, with Braveboy emphasizing the importance of the department in local governance. “It is one of the most important agencies in our government,” she stated.
Braveboy expressed confidence in Olugbenle’s capabilities, citing her extensive experience and leadership skills as key attributes for guiding the department through this transition.
Prior to her current role, Olugbenle was the director of the Office of Planning and Capital Programming at the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland Transit Administration. She holds both a Bachelor of Science in architecture and urban design and a Master of Science in community planning from the University of Maryland.
