A bus crash in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, occurred on Wednesday night, resulting in injuries to at least 28 people. The Baltimore County Fire Department has classified the incident as a mass casualty event.
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus was involved in a collision with several vehicles before ultimately crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. According to MTA spokesperson Jerimiah Moerke, the bus first struck a Lexus and then a Nissan.
One individual involved in the crash is reported to be in critical condition. Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the situation warranted escalation to a level one mass casualty incident due to the number of injuries.
Emergency responders successfully extricated the bus driver from the vehicle, which was lodged against the building. All injured parties were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical care.
The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the structural integrity of the four-story apartment building impacted by the bus. Fortunately, they confirmed that the building's support beams remained intact, although the first floor has been temporarily condemned.
Authorities are advising motorists to steer clear of the area as emergency crews continue their operations. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, with personnel from MTA Police, the Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors present at the scene.
