A Baltimore County man has been convicted of second-degree murder in connection with a tragic Christmas Eve shooting that claimed the life of his 4-year-old son.
Mark Jones Jr., 31, was found guilty of fatally shooting his son, Jacobi, while also injuring his 1-year-old daughter, Peyton, and their mother, Promyss Marcelle, at their residence in the Ross Ridge Apartment Homes in Rosedale. The jury reached its verdict after approximately 20 hours of deliberation over three days.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Jones shot his son and then turned the gun on himself. Assistant State’s Attorney Madison Frank emphasized the deliberate nature of Jones's actions, stating, “Every pull of that trigger is a choice.”
The court heard that tensions had escalated that morning, with Marcelle reportedly pleading with Jones to leave the apartment so she and the children could enjoy a peaceful Christmas. According to Frank, the situation deteriorated when Marcelle indicated she would continue to seek child support, prompting Jones to commit the violent act.
In defense, Assistant Public Defender Erin Cullinan argued that police hastily labeled Jones as the shooter without sufficient evidence. She mentioned that Jones had claimed during initial responses that there was a struggle over the firearm.
Jones was acquitted of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Sentencing has been scheduled for September 11, and he remains in custody without bail.
Outside the courtroom, Marcelle expressed relief at the verdict, stating, “I feel like I got justice for Jacobi. And that’s what matters the most.” In remembrance of her son, a memorial service was held last year, and a crisis center in Dundalk was named the “Jacobi Center” in his honor.
