BALTIMORE, Md. — Dr. Laura D'Anna, a dedicated educator with 55 years of service in the Baltimore City Public Schools, was honored with a surprise retirement party that left her deeply moved.
Friends, family, former students, and colleagues gathered at the American Legion Post #22 on York Road to celebrate D'Anna's remarkable career. Unbeknownst to her, the event was organized under the pretense of a dinner outing.
Her friend, Tammy Dowell, cleverly misled D'Anna by suggesting they were going out for Italian food, a tactic that proved successful in bringing her to the venue. Upon arrival, D'Anna was greeted by a room decorated in her favorite color, blue, and adorned with a tiara and a sash that read: 'The legend has retired.'
The celebration featured dozens of attendees, including childhood friends, former students, and colleagues who have been touched by D'Anna's commitment to education. Dowell remarked on the significance of the turnout, stating, 'It just says how many lives she's touched over 55 years and the incredible work she's done.'
Dr. D'Anna has served as a principal since 1998, gaining a reputation for her straightforward communication style. She dedicated much of her career to alternative schools that serve students in the juvenile detention system. Reflecting on her work, she expressed pride in never giving up on her students, saying, 'No, you can do better than this.'
At the event, several former students shared their gratitude, highlighting how D'Anna's guidance helped them succeed. A heartfelt letter from students at her last school, Eager Street Academy, was read aloud, expressing their love and best wishes for her future.
D'Anna admitted to having doubts about the recognition of her contributions, stating, 'I said nobody really cares, and I just felt so alone.' However, she emphasized the importance of resilience, advising anyone struggling in life to persevere and improve.
