A Baltimore man has been charged with multiple offenses, including first and second-degree murder, in connection with a shooting that took place over the weekend in Park Heights.
Lamont Bates, 45, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning at approximately 1:40 a.m. while allegedly trying to steal items from a store located on the 4600 block of Liberty Heights Avenue.
The charges against Bates stem from the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Xavier Williams, which occurred on Saturday on the 5400 block of Park Heights Avenue. Officers from the Northwest District responded to reports of gunfire at around 12:21 p.m. that day.
Upon arrival, police discovered Williams inside a business suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
In light of this incident, Baltimore City continues to grapple with issues of violent crime, despite a reported decline in homicides over recent years. According to Mayor Brandon Scott, there has been a 23% decrease in homicides during the first five months of 2026 compared to the previous year.
Mayor Scott emphasized the importance of combining traditional policing methods with violence intervention strategies to address the root causes of crime. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges, stating, "We still have a long way to go. We lost people this weekend, and that's too many people for us."
As of now, the city has recorded 46 homicides and 148 non-fatal shootings in 2026, a slight decrease from 62 homicides and 149 non-fatal shootings during the same period last year.
