Three members of the Baltimore City Fire Department lost their lives while bravely responding to a fire in a rowhouse in West Baltimore on January 24, 2022. The incident resulted in a partial collapse of the structure, trapping the firefighters inside.
Lieutenant Paul Butrim, 37, Lieutenant Kelsey Sadler, 33, and Fire Fighter/Paramedic Kenneth Lacayo, 30, all succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rescued from the debris. A fourth firefighter, John McMaster, is currently in critical condition following the incident.
A memorial service to honor the fallen firefighters is scheduled for February 2, 2022, at the Baltimore Convention Center, located at 1 W. Pratt St.
Remembering the Fallen
Paul Butrim joined the Baltimore City Fire Department in 2005, quickly earning a reputation as a dedicated and skilled firefighter. He is remembered for his passion for sports and his commitment to helping others. Butrim is survived by his wife, Rachel, and his family.
Kelsey Sadler, a Baltimore native, began her career in firefighting right after high school in 2006. She was known for her dedication and enthusiasm for her work. Posthumously, she has been promoted to lieutenant. Sadler leaves behind her husband, Brandon, and her family.
Kenneth Lacayo, originally from Montgomery County, became a firefighter in 2012 and joined the Baltimore Fire Department in 2014. He is remembered for his kindness and humility. Lacayo is survived by his fiancé, Clara Fenelon, and his family.
