Two Workers Rescued from Silo Elevator at Concrete Plant

Baltimore County emergency services carried out a successful rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon, saving two workers who were stranded approximately 75 feet above ground in a silo elevator at a concrete plant in Sparrows Point.

The incident occurred around 1:36 p.m. at Amrize, a building solutions company located in the 1100 block of Wharf Road. Fire officials reported that the elevator experienced a mechanical failure, leaving the workers suspended in mid-air.

Fire crews completed the rescue around 3:20 p.m. A specially trained rescuer was lowered to the workers' location, where they were fitted with harnesses before being lifted an additional 30 feet using a rope system.

Andrew S. Laird, a spokesperson for the Baltimore County Fire Department, confirmed the details of the operation. He also noted that Baltimore City was called in for mutual aid during the high-angle rescue.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Department is aware of the incident and is monitoring the situation for any further developments, according to spokesperson Dinah Winnick.

Officials from Amrize have not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.

This rescue follows a similar incident earlier this year, when Baltimore County fire crews rescued a worker from Atlantic Concrete who became trapped waist-deep in a sand hopper at a height of 75 feet.
