Vanessa Atterbeary Elected as Howard County's First African American County Executive

COLUMBIA, Md. — In a significant milestone for Howard County, Vanessa Atterbeary has been elected as the new county executive, marking a historic moment as the first African American to hold the position. Atterbeary, a former state delegate, won decisively with more than 58% of the vote in Tuesday's election.

The election results were announced just after 10:30 p.m., with Atterbeary maintaining a strong lead throughout the evening, particularly during early voting. Her main competitor, County Councilmember Deb Jung, finished in second place, followed closely by fellow Councilmember Liz Walsh, while Bob Cockey rounded out the field.

Atterbeary expressed her gratitude and excitement for the role, stating, “I am so thankful. I am so humbled. It feels kind of surreal. It is very special being born here, being raised here, raising my family here to be the next county executive.” She emphasized her commitment to serving the community she loves.

Throughout her campaign, Atterbeary was notably well-funded and received endorsements from prominent figures, including former county executives Ken Ullman and Calvin Ball. Maryland Governor Wes Moore also made a surprise appearance at her watch party, receiving enthusiastic applause from supporters. He praised Atterbeary, saying, “You gave me the partner that I need. I am thankful that you will have the leader that you deserve.”

As Atterbeary prepares for her transition into office, she plans to take advantage of the next few months to get ready for her new role. When asked about her first order of business, she humorously noted, “Tomorrow’s my birthday, so first order of business, is get a little rest.”
