West Baltimore's North Avenue Corridor Receives Over $70 Million in State Investment

Since the establishment of the West North Avenue Development Authority in 2021, West Baltimore has experienced over $70 million in investments along the North Avenue corridor. This initiative aims to revitalize one of the city's most underserved areas.

State Senator Antonio Hayes, who has been actively involved in the community, has participated in numerous ribbon-cutting ceremonies and grand openings for new facilities, including recreation centers and the Carolyn Fugett Intergenerational Center, since April.

Hayes, a native of West Baltimore, has witnessed the long-term effects of disinvestment in the area. He emphasized the importance of community organizations, such as those led by Dr. Rodwell in Coppin Heights and Jackie Cornish in Druid Heights, which have historically connected residents but lacked sufficient resources to enact change.

The West North Avenue Development Authority was created to bridge the gap among 16 communities along the corridor, facilitating collaboration and resource sharing. Hayes expressed optimism about the future, stating that by 2026, the investment is expected to enhance housing, mobility, and public spaces.

Additionally, the state has allocated $400,000 to BUBA Baseball, which aims to expand youth baseball access and mentorship opportunities within the community. Hayes hopes that ongoing investments will help reshape the perception of West Baltimore and support local organizations.

He encourages community leaders to collaborate with elected officials to foster positive change, highlighting the importance of collective effort in revitalizing the area.
