Newly released body camera footage from the Baltimore Police Department has shed light on a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred early on July 5 in Northwest Baltimore.
At approximately 1:25 a.m., police identified a vehicle linked to an armed carjacking. Authorities pursued the car for 18 minutes across multiple districts before it eventually came to a halt.
The video shows the driver, identified as 42-year-old Maurice Daniels, initially opening his door as if to exit the vehicle but then quickly retreating back inside. When officers approached, Daniels can be seen raising his hands in the air. However, moments later, he lowered one hand and reached for an object, prompting the officers to open fire.
It was later confirmed that Daniels was attempting to grab a replica BB gun. Baltimore City Police Commissioner Richard Worley reported that over 70 shots were fired during the incident. Daniels received medical assistance at the scene but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Fortunately, none of the officers involved sustained injuries.
Following the incident, all officers present have been placed on administrative leave. They have been identified as Officer Charles Blackman, Officer David Weldon, Sergeant Kevin Rivera, Officer Antonio Groomes, Officer Darrius Hicklin, and Officer Al-Shakier Drake, with years of service ranging from 3 months to 8 years.
The release of the body camera footage has prompted discussions about the use of force and police procedures in similar situations.
