Pikesville Bus Crash Results in 28 Injuries, One Critical

A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, on Wednesday night resulted in injuries to at least 28 individuals, prompting the Baltimore County Fire Department to classify the situation as a mass casualty incident.

The crash involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus that collided with several cars before ultimately crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. Initial reports indicate that the bus first struck a Lexus and then a Nissan before coming to a halt against the structure.

One person involved in the incident is reported to be in critical condition. Emergency responders successfully extricated the bus driver from the vehicle, which had become lodged in the building.

Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the incident was escalated to a level one mass casualty event due to the significant number of injured individuals. All those hurt were subsequently transported to local hospitals for medical attention.

Authorities, including MTA Police and building inspectors, are currently investigating the cause of the crash. The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the structural integrity of the four-story apartment building that was impacted. They confirmed that the building's support beams remained intact, although the first floor has been temporarily condemned.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area as emergency crews continue their work and the investigation unfolds.
